Itad is a leading consultancy providing technical expertise to international development programmes, projects and institutions. We specialise in Monitoring, Evaluation, Research and Learning (MERL) and our work ranges from designing MERL systems for multi-million pound initiatives, to conducting long-term impact evaluations across the world. Our MERL work covers a range of sectors, including Private Sector Development, Conflict Prevention, Peacebuilding, Climate Change, Health, Governance and Social Protection and Livelihoods.  

It is an exciting time for our Private Sector Development, Markets and Trade team. The team is growing quickly and is currently providing a range of MERL services to a diverse variety of clients, including DFID, Sida and a number of foundations. Our projects include designing complex M&E systems for multi-million pound initiatives, developing and running innovative learning partnerships and conducting complex impact evaluations. There is considerable potential for continued growth within the team, building on the exciting work we’re doing in areas such as Market Development, Financial Inclusion, Employment, Business Environment Reform, Trade, Urban Economic Growth, Women’s Economic Empowerment, Trade and Investment.

We are looking for a Consultant and Senior Consultant to join the team and support our existing MERL work and pursue new opportunities, expanding the portfolio of the team and to be actively involved in developing proposals and bids.

The roles are based in our offices in Hove (East Sussex) but with travel within the UK and internationally.

Role Purpose

The Private Sector Development, Markets and Trade team is looking for two new team members; a dynamic and motivated Consultant and Senior Consultant with strong Monitoring and Evaluation skills. They will be joining an expanding team and will help maintain the high quality of existing work on current projects and support the team in seizing new opportunities for Itad to make an impact.

This is a technical role and proven experience of MERL thinking and practice within at least one area of PSD, Markets and Trade is required.

The successful candidate will be able to quickly establish credible and strong working relationships with team members, clients, partners and stakeholders. In addition, a Senior Consultant will have a proven ability to lead, manage and motivate others to deliver high quality assignments. A clear understanding of commercial drivers and how they can influence both bidding and delivery is essential.

Principal Responsibilities

  •  Manage and provide technical inputs in to the high-quality delivery of a range of technical MEL assignments by working pro-actively with internal and external teams, including associate consultants and partner organisations
  • Provide high quality technical inputs on MEL assignments.
  • Ensure information and learning is captured and shared throughout assignment delivery to enable efficient and effective decision making
  • Ensure that assignments are managed on time and to budget, and within agreed company financial frameworks
  • Identify and mitigate risks and challenges to the successful delivery of projects
  • Maintain awareness of current and emerging opportunities, trends and ideas within the PSD space; and contribute to the Theme’s business development strategy by identifying opportunities to promote our interests/expertise
  • As agreed with the Theme Lead, seek out and pursue new business opportunities and assess business leads identified by Business Development & Marketing to determine their commercial viability
  • Work with the Business Development & Marketing team in the production of EOIs and Proposals, including identifying suitable external associates for project teams and consortia where appropriate
  • Contribute to the growth of our reputational capital and positioning as a thought leader by assisting in the development of knowledge capital and products for external use
  • Proactively develop and maintain a professional network with clients, partners, external associates and like-minded organisations, leveraging opportunities to build external profile as a subject matter expert

 Professional Expertise & Key Competencies

  • Proven experience of working on MERL assignments in the thematic areas of Private Sector Development, Markets and Trade
  • Proven experience and understanding of the commercial drivers required to successfully deliver projects
  • Experience and proven success in managing the delivery of MERL assignments/components for a range of international clients in a consultancy role or as a staff member within a major aid agency is essential
  • Significant technical expertise in at least one major aspect of data collection and analysis is essential, e.g. qualitative methods; survey design; survey sampling; quantitative statistical analysis
  • Fluency in written and spoken English
  • Demonstrable experience of leading and managing successful project teams
  • Strong client orientation and service delivery approach, with the ability to influence and leverage external and internal stakeholders
  • Proficiency in one or more other UN language is an advantage
  • Relevant Master’s degree would be desirable
